“Return to Tell the Tale”… a solo art show by 3rdi NOV 1, 2014

3rdi_gcs_dtsa_artshowToday we look at the night GCS clothing store came back from the dead and returned to Downtown Santa Ana. NOV 1st, 2014, in conjunction with the first saturday art walk, GCS opened it’s new doors to the world and hosted the show “Return to Tell the Tale”, a solo art show by Ivan “3rdi” Vega. How fitting it was to have this great artist commemorate our re-grand opening, we have had the honor of showing this guy for a few years now and we had to have him return to GCS and bless the new space and get us going on the right foot.

If you have not looked into this artist by now, well what are you waiting for. Check his site out here and look for more works from 3rdi at GCS in the near future.

Classic Icons – A Visual Representation art show NOV 23, 2013

1374776_599962646716591_182304209_nNOV 23, 2013….  GCS was host to the ‘Classic Icons – a visual representation’ art show that was put together by KENOS ONE and SHUCKS ONE. These guys are great artists and have been good friends of the GCS for some time now and we were excited to host the event when the plan was hatched a few months back. The idea was to celebrate the iconic personalities that served to influence KENOS and SHUCKS’ art over the years. Mainly consisting of portraiture, the show was made up of legends from the worlds of music, sports and comedy.

Opening night was a success, attendees had the gallery jammed packed for the entire 4 hours. The artists had a good little write up in the OC WEEKLY in the week leading up to the show. The art show will remain in the gallery for the remainder of the month and will take a portion of the gallery for the next art walk. So stop in and see what SHUCKS and KENOS has new for you!

“Bringing Out The Dead II” art show NOV ’13

In celebration of the November Art Walk and Day of the Dead, GCS presented “Bringing Out The Dead II”. An art show that brought out different aspects of life and death and the beauty that comes from both. This was the second year that this theme was explored and it was just as impactful as the previous show. The roster included some artists that are familiar to the GCS audience as well as a few new names. It was non-stop crowds all evening long as the night coincided with the “Noche De Altares” street festival two blocks over.gcs_flyer-01

artist signing with BUA at GCS Clothing Store Pomona

NOV 9th, 2013 – Pomona, CA

The legendary visual artist Justin Bua, a.k.a. BUA paid the GCS Clothing Store a visit for a signing to coincide with the release of his new painting “The Boom Box”. A true amercian artist, Justin Bua has become one of the most recognizable artist in the world. He has been a part of countless artistic, academic and commercial endevours touching nearly every facet of the hip hop, music and art world. As described on his wiki page:

his work “is also heavily influenced by Ernie Barnes, the… creator of the “Sugar Shack” painting featured in the opening credits of the television sitcom Good Times (1974–1979) and Marvin Gaye’s album I Want You (1976). The style is recognized for elongated limbs that represent rhythmic movement.”  It continues to describe BUA as “Currently, he teaches figure drawing at the University of Southern California, while continuing to be a leading innovator in both the fine and commercial art worlds. Bua’s energetic and vocal worldwide fan base ranges from former presidents, actors, musicians, professional athletes, and dancers, to street kids and art connoisseurs”.

Coming fully loaded with Prints, Reproductions and Posters of his work, this event was a great chance for some of his most hard core fans to purchase directly from the artist these charished items. Fans, art lovers, musicians, fellow artists and performers alike were on hand for the special appreance. They came in snatching up BUA pieces and snapping pictures as momentos of the night and in appreciation to what Bua’s art means to them.

We look forward to working again with BUA on future events and projects… look out for BUA to come to a GCS near you.

January’s $50 and Under Art Show

Everyone knows that we are catching up on loose ends. This blog post takes us back to the 1st art show of the year. “$50 and Under Art Show” went down January 7th, 2012 and it was our first completely open art show. Open art show you say, what is that? We’ll it was the first time that we accepted art work sight unseen as long as it fulfilled certain criteria. 1) The piece had to be an original 2) The piece had to be ready to hang and 3) it had to be priced $50 and under. Simple enough. And the response was excellent. We had over 140 original pieces from veteran GCS artists as well as those neighborhood cats that hadn’t had a chance to get up on these walls. Judging from the response we got, a second $50 and under art show should be in the works soon. Maybe we’ll top 200 pieces.

Special thanks to DCaster/taco comics/ Dave Castro for doing a live painting session in the front windows and then raffling off the piece at the end of the night. As always, Moe Man and Big Wiz were on the one’s and two’s. Thanks also to everyone that came out to the show. Here are some pictures if some of the lucky art buyers that got to take some beauty home with them.

Subterranean Heads 2

February’s art walk brought us “Subterrenean Heads 2” art show.  Curated with the help of 455er, this show brought out the likes of Mear One, Splat , YT, Jelly Bones, Biafra Art, Akil, Just195, Egads, ATGL Earl, Ebenholtz among others… This was the second part to the subterrenean heads series which focuses on street art and the creatures of the night.  Talk about stickers, this show brought out the sticker lover in everyone. Highlights of the show included Mear One’s huge limited edition art prints, a spoken word performance by Mike the Poet, and some bay area newstands loaded with hard to find tags and stickers that made their way down here courtesy of Splat.

Special thanks to the artists and friends that brought out thier great art work for the show. And most of all, to the art fans and customers that made the night a great success. You know we doing this again!!!..
